We’re back from NYC — what a trip! Details and photos to follow soon but for now, check out a blog Kevin Guthrie (Gus’s brother) wrote while joining us on our visit to Sirius.

Hi folks

Marty, Nalini and I are in the 36th floor at Rockefeller Center for the Martinez and Guthrie recording session for Sirius Radio. It is SO cool. Joe and Gus have finished recording Home and are doing “The Wind Cries Mary”
now. They are nailing it.

But let me take you back a few moments. When I arrived here, Marty was waiting for me in the lobby. When we came up, Gus and Joe were practicing and warming up in the “Green Room”. Anyway, when Marty and I walked in, we
were greeted by a man who said: “Hi. I am Liam from Talent Relations here at Sirius Radio, you with Martinez and Guthrie? They are in the Green Room.”. To me, that says it all. Of course the Green Room has all the requisite signed memorabilia from various famous artists and recording acts. And plenty of Red Bull in the refrigerator.

There was a cool moment before the recording started. Sari called and exclaimed: “Gus is on the radio!”. Turns out, Sirius was on at Gourmet Garage (our grocery store) and they were playing “Home”. A cool coincidence and we all decided it is a nice harbinger.

I got to tell you, this is so much pressure. They are playing four songs. Sirius wants them to do “Home” because it is the song in regular rotation, plus one cover, and two others. Joe and Gus have to play the song all the way through without making a mistake. Sure they can do multiple takes, but they have to go all the way through the song. It’s not like playing in front of a live audience where if you miss the note a bit, it just goes away, flying into the air. This is going to be the version on the radio. Yikes.

As they play the song and it is recording, I can barely breathe I am so hoping for them to get through it. Well, now they have two songs done. The program director is really excited that they are doing “…Mary”. She did a search on their inventory and they have never had an artist cover that. And then she said she has never heard an acoustic version.

Back to holding my breath.
